Society Spotlight: Sapphic Society

The hunt for Queer spaces can be incredibly frustrating. At university, a place where many come into their own, and perhaps seek to explore their identity more openly, it can leave you thinking: “okay, what now?”

We know this feeling all too well. All three of us attended both pride-oriented and sapphic-exclusive events in our first year of university, meeting many lovely people, but also recalling the disappointment when these events were somewhat few and far between. That’s why, while sitting on a bedroom floor on a rainy day before the beginning of last academic year, the three of us first raised the idea of restarting Sapphic Society ourselves. 

With the society up and running once more, our intention above all was, and still is, to ensure that we provide a visible community, both on campus and online, so that you know where to find us (and other sapphics) during your time at university. Our first event, a meet-up that began in Curiositea, but soon moved to T-Bar due to a fantastic turnout, showed us what was possible for this society and our community. Seeing so many people turning up and chatting to new people was exactly what we wanted for our society, and we were able to follow it up with a collaboration with Discourse Society and a film night with Sequoia Zine and Planorama.

This year, we have an expanded exec and lots of exciting things in the works, including a meetup before Loud and Proud and a picnic in freshers’ week – we’re so excited to see where it goes as the year progresses!
